The Tro Breiz medieval pilgrimage is a circular route connecting the seven cathedrals of the seven founding saints, a significant journey into Brittany’s origins and identity. The Dark Age arrival of the Breton saints from the British Isles raises issues that still reverberate for incomers today, like migration and acceptance. In search of evidence and historical context, Wendy Mewes explores this lengthy itinerary on foot over a year of travel, through town, country and coastal landscapes, enlivened by traces of the ancient past and sacred spaces, from megaliths and healing springs to luminous cathedrals. She battles both pain and weather to celebrate the rich Celtic culture of her adopted land, and mark twenty-five years of writing about Brittany.
